Turn on Your Encourager's Heart
January 7, 2020
I am always delighted when someone tells me they like my outfit or they say, "Hey, dinner last night was amazing." It's uplifting to be encouraged in these general ways, and I strongly recommend that you give lots of those types of encouragements. But can I tell you that you can make a spiritual deposit of encouragement in someone's life that not only takes their life to a whole new level, but it takes your life to a whole new level as well. The writer of Hebrews says, "Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds…encouraging one another" (Hebrews 10:24–25). When we love and encourage one another with the sincere love of God, we're allowing God to extend His grace through us. We're saying, "God, I want to be that person. I want You to use me." That's when you'll take a whole new perspective on how you are encouraging people and make deep spiritual deposits into their lives.
There are countless general encouragements we should get good at giving every day, making others feel special. And then there are those encouragements where you ask God to show you someone to whom He wants you to extend His grace. You may want to post yourself a note somewhere around the house where you'll see it that says "Encourage Someone Today!" Then find that someone whom God brings to your heart and mind and go after them. Don't let the day go by until you have encouraged them in a meaningful way.
Remember that the writer of Hebrews also said, "Encourage one another daily, while it's still today" (Hebrews 3:13). There's an urgency to this encouragement because he adds, "So that so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness." That's a serious word. We must make spiritual deposits of encouragement in one another's lives so we stay true to loving God on our journey of faith. You have no idea how significantly your encouragement can impact the direction of someone's life.
If you've ever encouraged someone and walked away feeling encouraged yourself, that's the way our God is. He wants to fill you with all joy and peace so that you may overflow to others with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. When you encourage others, you have that pipeline to Him. You and I can have a whole new life if we begin to be the depositors of encouragement and reflect and extend the glory of God. Turn on your encourager's heart and let it flow, and you'll find that the blessings of God will chase you down and overtake you.
