Giving Back to Those Who Give So Much
By Joel Osteen - Feb 08, 2010
Not too long ago, Captain Edward DeVinney, Commanding Officer of the Navy destroyer ship, the USS Cole wrote and asked us if we would come and pray for his crew of “Determined Warriors” before they headed out for a seven-month tour that would put them in harms way. (You may have seen in the news several years back that the USS Cole was attacked by terrorists while fueling in the Yemeni port of Aden.) We considered it such an honor so last week, Victoria and I, and some of our staff traveled to Norfolk, VA.

We were onboard for about three hours and had the opportunity to encourage and pray for so many of the crewmembers. We’re so grateful to Captain DeVinney, Chaplain Joseph Wilburn, and Master Chief Timmons for their gracious hospitality while we were there. It was such an honor to tour the ship and meet so many great men and women who are serving our country. We will be staying in touch with them, praying for them, and sending bibles and resources for the crew and their families.

We so appreciate all of our military and families who sacrifice so much to defend our freedom. They give in ways we will never know!

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13, NLT).
