Say Goodbye
By Joel Osteen - Dec 27, 2019
A friend of mine owned a very successful business and had big plans for the future. But after twenty-five years, his business slowed down as his competitors increased. He put forth all the effort he possibly could, meeting with his staff at six o’clock in the morning and taking clients out every evening. But God is called “the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end” (Revelation 1:8). We talk a lot about God doing new things, but we don’t hear much about how He brings things to an end. This is hard for us, because it can feel like a setback, like a failure. After all the hard work, my friend’s company didn’t make it. For a few months he was so disappointed he would hardly talk on the phone.

I told him what I’m telling you. Just as God opens doors, He closes doors. The reason He closes a door is because He has something better. The best thing you can do is say goodbye. Quit beating yourself up, quit bringing failures from yesterday into today. If one dream died, dream another dream. My friend got his passion back and started a consulting business. All kinds of doors began to open. Today his new company is far more successful than what he lost.

In the Scriptures, when God said to Abraham, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation…” (Genesis 12:1–2), I’m sure Abraham loved his relatives. For a season everything had been fine, but when God was about to promote Abraham and do something big, He knew his relatives and the people where he lived wouldn’t be able to handle it. Sometimes the people closest to you may not see the greatness in you and will try to keep you from what God has put in your heart. Sometimes you have to say goodbye to certain things and people so you can become all you were created to be.

Is there something you need to leave behind? A hurt, a bad attitude, an area that you’re compromising in? Don’t bring that into 2020. You can’t go through life holding on to hurts, wrong attitudes, and people who are not good for you. It’s time to say goodbye to failure; this is a new day. Say goodbye to guilt; you’re forgiven. Say goodbye to what didn’t work out; God has something better. If you do this, you’re going to come into new levels. New relationships and new doors are going to open, with healing, freedom, and breakthroughs. It’s going to be a bountiful, abundant, flourishing year.
