Down Is Not Your Destiny
By Joel Osteen - May 15, 2020
When we’re in difficult times, it's easy to feel like the prophet Micah. He gives a list of negative things that happened to him—bad breaks, lack, injustice, betrayal. It was very depressing. If he had stopped there, we wouldn’t be reading about him. But he went on to say, “As for me, I look to the Lord for his help; I wait for God to save me; he will hear me. Do not rejoice against me, O my enemy, for though I fall, I will rise again!” (Micah 7:7–8). He may have been knocked down, but in the middle of the difficulty, he was speaking victory. He wasn’t giving up. He was saying, “This problem didn’t come to stay; it came to pass. God being for me is more than the world being against me. I will arise.” When you declare, “I will arise,” forces of darkness tremble and angels go to work.

We all face things that are trying to push us down today. It’s easy to lose our passion and think it will never change. But God didn’t create you to be overcome; He created you to be an overcomer. He’s put something in your spirit called “bounce back,” which means that when you get knocked down, you don’t stay down. There is a force breathing in your direction, making things happen that you can’t make happen, giving you strength that you don’t have. It causes you to rise up. Because you have bounce back, that difficulty cannot defeat you. It’s just a matter of time before you rise back up.

Thoughts will tell you, “You’ll never get well. This pandemic has ruined your finances. You’ll always struggle with this addiction.” Don’t believe those lies. No more saying, “It’s never going to change. My business is not going to make it. My child will never get back on course.” Zip that up. If you talk defeat, you’re going to have defeat. Rather, you need to say with the apostle Paul, “The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives inside me.” The forces of darkness did their best to stop Jesus, but they couldn’t keep Him from rising. That tells me that nothing you face can keep you from your purpose—no pandemic, no sickness, no layoff. The enemy may have done his best, but his best will never be enough.

Things may be coming against you, but know this: Down is not your destiny, and defeat is not how your story ends. I believe that even now the forces that have hindered you are being broken. Powers of darkness are being pushed back. You’re about to see breakthroughs, freedom, joy, and victory. Get ready to rise!
