When you know your God and understand what He’s done, that He’s already defeated the enemy, that He’s taken away his power, you’ll be strong. You won’t be moved by opposition, you won’t fall apart when trouble comes, you won’t give up because somebody did you wrong. You know it can’t stop your purpose. You’ll not only have a supernatural strength, but you’ll do great exploits. You’ll take your family to a new level, break addictions that have held you back, and accomplish dreams that are bigger than you’ve imagined. Have the right perspective: Whatever enemies you face—enemies of fear, depression, sickness, or insecurity—have already been defeated. Now, do what the Father requires. Move forward. Believe for your healing, speak victory over your children, stir up your gifts, pray some bold prayers, take steps of faith. What’s trying to stop you is defeated. The people who were holding you back have lost their influence. The power of the sickness, the addiction, or the trouble at work has been broken. It’s time to take possession of what God promised you.
When you read in Psalm 37 that “God will give you the desires of your heart,” do you wonder how that can be? We all want God to do some amazing things in our lives, but does that mean “any” desire of our heart? It’s easy to forget the first half of that verse: “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will…” While we want God to give us our heart desires, His promises and blessings come with conditions that we must meet in our heart. God first wants to shape His desires in our heart so that He can bring out the best in us. The condition of your heart must be that you put Him first every day, that you delight in Him, which means you find your joy and happiness, your purpose and meaning, in Him. Do you see that what you delight in is what shapes your desires? God wants to give you the desires of your heart as long as you have allowed Him to be the delight of your heart. It starts in your relationship with Him. Those two must meet together.
So what are you delighting in? Where are you spending your time? How are you shaping those desires? Are you investing in your relationship with Him? Sometimes we have the wrong desire, and we struggle to make it happen on our own, because we don’t allow our delight to first be in our God.
When you delight in the Lord, you love what Jesus loves. You love the things that God loves. You want to do what God wants you to do. You want to go where God wants you to go. You want to listen to and watch what He approves of. When you love God, your desires are for the things of God and you give yourself to them. The apostle Paul sums up what I’m trying to say: “The heart regulates the hands” (2 Corinthians 8:12). What is in your heart, you put your hands to. What you’ve allowed to form in your heart, you go after because you have passion for it. Your hands and your heart work together.
God wants to develop us into His people—people of faith, people who see the desires of their heart fulfilled. He wants to bring out God opportunities, God moments, God miracles, but you have to delight in Him. Psalm 37 goes on to say, “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this.” If you take the time to invest and delight and dwell in our God, He will ignite your desires, your heart and your hands will be working together, and you will abound in His grace.
